Becoming a Foster

Being a foster with 2nd Chances Rescue is a rewarding experience as you are helping us save another dogs life! We can only rescue as many dogs we have foster homes for so we are always looking for new fosters. We provide you with all of the supplies and needed vet care – you provide the dog with love, companionship and guidance.

Please keep the following in mind to help you and your family decide if you are willing to take on this wonderful commitment:

All necessary supplies are provided (leashes, bowls, bedding, food, flea medication etc.), though some fosters choose to use their own supplies as further donation to the rescue. Foster dogs are provided with medical care through our veterinary partners. Foster are encouraged to let us know what their preference of dog is as it will most likely be accommodated. It can include sex, age, breed etc. If a foster dog is not working out, the rescue will need at least 72 hours to find another foster.

Foster dogs are not perfect – they need care, patience, and affection. Many require socialization and some basic training. Most often, dogs that come out of shelters are frightened and shy. Watching them come out of their shell is one of the best parts of fostering.

Foster dogs must be leashed at all times. They should have identification tags to improve a safe return if they get out. If a foster dog does escape, we ask that you help find the dog by notifying us immediately and posting flyers. Though not everyone can provide free roam of their home, we ask that our dogs are not crated for long periods of time during the day. We are committed to cage-free living, exemplified by the fact that we do not have kennels.

We rely in our fosters for pictures and bios of available dogs for online listings. Your wonderful updates help the dogs find loving homes faster. Fosters must be available to facilitate meet and greets with potential adopters, and respond to applicants in a timely manner. Depending on the foster’s preferences, meet and greets can be held at home, a local park, or an adoption event.

Fosters may choose to be involved in the adoption process and keep in touch with adopters who may provide occasional updates on the dogs. This is another fabulous perk for fostering for 2nd Chances Rescue!
